“Japonism” is the term for ceramics and furniture inspired by imported Japanese goods throughout the late 17th – 19th Century in the U.K and which inspired the Arts & Crafts Movement, along with Art Nouveau, with its characteristic basis in natural organic forms and elaborate surface decoration, seen here as cherry or orange blossom.
The initials on this teapot don’t appear to belong to any of the 3 Martin brothers and so it may be a commission piece – the curiously mangled spout may account for the possibility that it never left their studio.
