This example of a small vase is illustrated with a frog-like creature that shows a very clear Oriental influence in the design and would be at home in a Japanese woodblock print where animals were often anthropomorphized to mimic and ridicule human behaviour.
It’s unclear if the Martin Bros explored such reference for information and inspiration but it is more than likely as the period during which they worked saw a great deal of trade between East & West that included traditional arts and crafts items alongside the more ubiquitous decorative ceramics in porcelain and stoneware.
