The Martin Brothers produced pottery “lines” in their distinctive style that was in many ways ahead of the time that they worked, however it appears that they were never very successful in selling their work in large enough quantities to scale their business – it’s only in recent times that their genius and individuality has been appreciated and they have become collectible.
The “Judge” pot was probably one of a pair and would have sat very well with the various mugs and figurines of notorious people of the era.
Collectible artist originated work is very much a trend in the 21st century and I think the Martin Brothers would have thrived in the current climate of artists producing limited run unique items in small scale businesses and selling their work worldwide via the internet.
